The house from the street at dusk: a single-storey craftsman with the porch light on, three lit windows and a wet driveway after rain.

701 Old York Drive · Richmond, Virginia

One house, let by the week, with the whole bill on the page.

No listing-site headline rate. Put your dates in below and the house prices every night of the stay, adds the cleaning and the 14% Virginia lodging tax, and tells you what one night actually costs. If the nights are gone it says which ones and offers you the next week that is not.

The stay sheet

What your dates cost, night by night

Every night is priced on its own: the season band it falls in, plus the weekend uplift on a Friday or a Saturday outside the summer weeks. Then the cleaning, then the tax on both. The big figure is what leaves your account.

Your dates

Arrival, then nights. Nothing is held and nothing is charged here.

Dogs are $60 each for the stay. Check-in after 16:00, out by 10:00.

Put an arrival date in and the house will price every night of the stay.

Before you ask

What this house has not got

Ten things a listing photograph will not tell you. Every one of them has cost us a booking, and every one of them has saved somebody a bad week.

A dishwasher
The kitchen is the 1948 one. Double sink, a wooden rack, and eight of every plate and glass.
A second full bathroom
One full bath on the main floor and a half bath off the kitchen, in a house that sleeps eight. Mornings need a rota.
Air conditioning in the attic room
A window unit that holds 78°F until about three in the afternoon in July, and a ceiling fan after that.
Step-free entry
Four steps to the porch and two into the hall. Three of the four bedrooms are on one floor once you are in.
Off-street parking for a second car
One space in the alley. The rest is free street parking, and on a Friday night you may be two houses down.
A silent 5:40 in the morning
A freight train crosses the trestle four blocks away most mornings. You hear it with the windows open.
A pool, a hot tub, or water you can see
None of the three. The river is a fourteen-minute drive and the beach is over two hours.
A strong AT&T signal
One bar at the back of the house. Wi-Fi calling works; the fibre is 300 Mbps and we test it every changeover.
A high chair
We lend a travel cot if you ask a week ahead. No high chair, and the dining chairs have no straps.
Anyone coming in while you are here
We clean before you arrive and after you leave. No mid-stay visits unless something breaks.

What people say when they get home

6 ratings and the longer accounts people let us print. We publish the four-star ones about the attic room in July as well.

The figure on the website was the figure on the card. Ten nights, the cleaning, the tax, all of it, and nothing turned up at the end that we had not already seen.
The Okonjo family, ten nights in October
We took the winter rate expecting a compromise and got a warm house with a fire and the city to ourselves. The train at half past five is real. We slept through it after the first night.
Ruth and Del, a February week
They told us to leave the attic room empty rather than sell us a bed in it. Nobody in twenty years of renting houses has talked us out of anything.
Marcus, a week in July with six of us
The price we were quoted in March was the price we paid in October, to the dollar, tax included.
★★★★★
One space in the alley and free street parking after that. Said on the site, true on the night.
★★★★★
The attic room is warm in July, exactly as warm as they say it is. Everything else was better than the photographs.
